Student of the Month: Acacia Anglin
This month's student of the month comes from Peer Helpers. Her name is Acacia Anglin. She has made quit the impact on Peer Helpers Coordinator, Ryan Kauffman, as well as those who she has worked with. Below is a little more about Acacia written by one of her fellow Peer Helpers, Helen West. |
Acacia Anglin arrived on this planet on June 4th of the year 1990. Where she came from only her and her twin, Elias, may know. But, wherever she did come gave her amazing artistic abilities along with superb people skills. Acacia makes it her business to make the world a better place WHILE she makes herself a better person.
In the art world, Acacia has been brightening this earth with her amazing talent for 17 years! (That’s a long career) One of her big “honors,” “accomplishments,” or what you call it, was when she attended Oxbow down in Cali during the fall of 2006. Her final, outstanding, project was done in face paint/photography major.
In the world of helping fellow man, Acacia always lends a hand to her friends. She is also actively involved in the local Peer Helpers and has been involved in since middle school- helping create a safe and substance-free environment in the local Sitka schools.
Sadly, but not so sadly, Acacia is a senior this year and is leaving us, and Sitka, to go onto bigger, brighter things. Over the summer Acacia, along with Elias will be traveling Europe- dazzling the Europeans will all their charm! After that, Acacia says she doesn’t really know what she’ll do, perhaps she’ll study art design…something along the lines of costume or face paint design…or maybe she’ll solve mysteries and study forensics (and of course we all think CSI when we hear forensics…but Acacia knows more than that)! “Whatever it is,” she says, “Is happening at Western Oregon University.”
So good luck Acacia! We love you!
Little Tid Bits about Acacia:
Favorite Color: today is Pink or Orange
Favorite Food: Caesar Salad
Some hobbies: Peer Helpers, Pep Band, Art and crafting and playing with her chocolate lab!

Student of the Month: Megan Bahrt
Megan Bahrt is a junior at Sitka High. She is in her first year of Learn and Serve's Service Learning/Mentor Tutoring Program. She volunteers at Baranof Elementary where she is highly involved with the students' classwork. Below is what Megan had to say about herself and the program. |
I am a sixth generation Sitkan. I have six people in my family including two brothers and one sister. I am Secretary Treasurer for my Junior Class in Student Government. I have been involved with National Honor Society for the past two years. My interests include anything I can be creative with, Track & Field, and music.
Why did you want to do this program?
I wanted to do this program because I am interested in pursuing a career as a teacher, hopefully majoring in early childhood education or elementary education when I am in college.
What do you like most about this program?
I like the interaction with the children, not only the class as a whole, but with the children individuality. I get flashbacks and memories of my own first grade experience and it's interesting to compare and contrast.
What are your goals for the future? Does this program help you in those goals?
I want to have a career involved with children. Being involved in this program allows me to have a one on one experience in the classroom and view how teachers teach in various ways.

Student of the Month: Jesse Edson
Jessie Edson is a senior at Sitka High. She is now in her second year of Learn and Serve's Service Learning/Mentor Tutoring Program. She volunteers at Baranof Elementary where she is highly involved with the students' classwork. Below is what Jessie had to say about herself and the program. |
I am 17 and have grown up in Sitka. I have one sister and live with my parents. My parents have a F/V Kupreanof and we tender every summer. I spent my junior year as a Rotary exchange student in Brazil. I enjoy being outside, camping, fishing, and hiking.
Why did you want to do this program?
I thought this program would be fun and I like kids. I did this my sophomore year and really enjoyed it. This year I wanted younger kids. I am lucky because I have enough free time this year to be here all morning.
What do you like most about this program?
I like when the kids understand something I taught them. It is a rewarding feeling.
What are your goals for the future? Does this program help you in those goals?
I am looking to go to Autec in Seward for pipeline welding next year so this program doesn't really prepare me for that. It does give me experience working with children which could come in handy if I have kids some day. I just really like this program even though it doesn't really help me in the career I want.

Student of the Month:
Lael Lee
This month’s Student of the Month is Lael Lee. Lael is a tutor with Crossing Bridges’ Homework Helpers. She goes to Blatchley Middle School Mondays through Thursday to help sixth, seventh, and eighth graders with their schoolwork as well as play games with them. Lael is a veteran of the program and has a perfect attendance record so far this year.
Here is what Lael had to say about her time with Homework Helpers and a little bit more about herself.
About my experience with Homework Helpers…
I have been a Crossing Bridges tutor for one and half years already and am in the program again this year because I enjoy helping junior high students with their school/homework. Another reason that I came back was to earn work experience time and to earn some extra money. The money I earn is going towards the college I will be attending beginning in the Fall of 2008. I like tutoring at BMS because it is more of a comfortable and relaxed environment. I leave the high school when school gets out so I arrive a little after Homework Helpers starts each day and when I come in there are already people talking and getting to work so it is easy to see who needs help and who doesn’t. When I first started, the program was run by a different person and when I walked into the club it was dead quiet – nobody was suppose to talk or make any noise unless they needed help – it was kind of awkward. But not it is really nice and when students need help they aren’t afraid to ask and are really open.
A few things about myself…
In my free time I enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping, puzzles, reading, playing on the computer, X-box, listening to music, hanging out with my friends, swimming, and going for walks. I am a senior in high school and plan to go to college in Alaska or Washington majoring in Environmental Science and perhaps get a minor in Accounting. While I’m in college I plan to either find a job or volunteer at an elementary school or junior high to continue to help students learning.

Student of the Month:
Ryan Staton
This month’s Student of the Month is Ryan Staton. Ryan is in his second year with the Crossing Bridges Tutoring Program at Baranof Elementary. Below is a little more about Ryan.
|
Hi my name is Ryan Staton and I am a senior at Sitka High. I was born and raised in Juneau, Alaska. I moved to Sitka my sophomore year when I was six-teen years old. I have two older sisters. Katie, 23, goes to University of Oregon and is studying law and Tess, 19, goes to Lewis and Clark in Portland, OR and is in her second year. My mother is a retired teacher in Juneau and still lives there. My father is a consultant and is a part of government affairs and lives with me part-time. I live with my grandmother, Ethel Staton, who I take care of due to her macular degeneration, which means she has bad eyesight. The things I like to do in Sitka are teach kids, work at Stereo North, and play basketball and baseball. My plans for the future are to graduate from Sitka High and go on to college.
Why did I decide to do Homework Helpers (this year and last year)? The reason I decided to do Homework Helpers both this year and last year is because I like helping others! It also makes my day when I help a student on their homework. They get so happy and smile their great big smiles.
Why did I want to be at Baranof Elementary? I wanted to be at Baranof Elementary because my mother taught little kids and I thought I would enjoy it too! The reason I came back to Baranof for a second year is because of the kids I kept in touch with over the summer. I wanted to go back and help them with their schoolwork.
What do I like most about the program? What have I learned? I like this program because I enjoy teaching kids. Helping others is what I would like to do with my life. Also, I am happy there is a program like this because it gives high school students a chance to see if they would enjoy teaching because they can take this class to see if it will fit them in life. I have learned that dealing with kids is something that I will always enjoy and I may do it as my career. |
